KAIWAN HUDDLED INTO the corner of the hold; the wood cold against her wounds. She had fought the sylvanthir when they took her from the tavern, and Tyras had beaten her again. The journey through the twisting, shifting plazas of Sylvangarde had been a blur after that. The Ullensian had been barely conscious as they carried her onto the ship. Some of the crew had wanted to abandon her, fearing that if the collar failed she would sink them. Tyras had stood firm. He would not let her go. He had chained her to the stockade in the hold and forced her to take some broth. Then at last, he had left her to rest.

The timbers groaned: yet more refugees were flocking on board with their possessions. Kaiwan wondered if the ship could safely carry so very many. She had no knowledge of the sea. The smell of salt water was new to her, as was the lurching of the vessel at each wave. They had not even slipped their moorings and she was already seasick.

Had anyone realised at Briersburge yet that she and Elharan were in danger? Would anyone be able to find them? Perhaps the Ves’Neryn that had tracked her before could do so again, or perhaps Lord Von Rosenhof might have a spell. Ullen has abandoned me. Perhaps He is displeased that I have parted from Efrym. But those potions...why did he keep them if he had really changed his mind? How can I trust him after that?

She whimpered then despite herself: feeling sick, exhausted, and dizzy. The ruined flesh of her back ached, not that it was even the worst harm that had befallen her. “Elharan, I am sorry to fail you!”
